Dorothy Babcock Meakin, 90, of Round Pond and Damariscotta, passed away quietly on July 2 at Lincoln Home, Newcastle, after a brief illness.
She was born in Medford, Mass. on Aug. 16, 1915, and raised in the Boston area and Round Pond by her mother, Gladys Geyer Babcock Bryant and grandparents, Mary and Laforest Geyer. Her father, William Babcock, died when she was three.
She graduated from Boston School of Art in 1937, and then married the love of her life, Lawrence W. Meakin, of Littleton, N.H. After several years, they moved to Yeadon, Penn., where they raised their family. She summered in Round Pond throughout her life and returned to Round Pond and Damariscotta full time in 1988.
She was a strong, quiet, self-reliant woman who made her way through life with as little fuss as possible. An accomplished artist, she loved art, all kinds of crafts, sewing, upholstering, reading, playing cards and travel. She loved to sit on her porch and would go for a ride at the drop of a hat.
She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star and regularly attended the Yeadon Presbyterian Church, The Methodist Church of Round Pond, and the Damariscotta Methodist Church.
She is predeceased by her husband, Lawrence, and one daughter, Carol Ann.
She is survived by her daughter, Laura Lee and husband Richard Elsworth, Sr. of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; son, Donald and wife Jean Piper Meakin of Round Pond; grandchildren, Cindy Elsworth of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Rick and wife Vera Elsworth of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Bill Meakin and fiancée Jessica Williams of Lisbon Falls, and Jen Meakin of N. Miami, Fla.; one great-granddaughter, Alexis Elsworth of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; and several cousins.
Private services and interment will be held at the convenience of Dorothy’s family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bristol Fire and Rescue.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
