Dorothy Beal Alley, 94, of Boothbay, died on April 21 at home with her family by her side.
She was born in Jonesport on July 2, 1915, the daughter of John Henry and Katie Lee Beal, attended local schools and graduated from Jonesport High School.
In 1933 she married Alton Preston. They made their home in Jonesport and Rockland. In her early years she worked at various jobs in Rockland. In 1959 she married John Alley Sr. living in Jonesport briefly before moving to East Boothbay, and in 1982 moved into their present home in Boothbay.
Dorothy attended the Boothbay Baptist Church, was an avid reader and loved to spend time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed cooking, gardening, handiwork, sewing, and knitting.
Dorothy is predeceased by her first husband of 25 years, Alton Preston; son, Richard Preston; and brothers, Roger Beal Sr. and Nolan Beal.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, John Alley Sr.; daughter, Lanta Preston Hachey of Old Town; stepdaughter, Joanne Bishop and husband Harry of Addison; daughter-in-law, Lelia Preston of Lumberton, N.J.; stepsons, John Alley Jr. and partner Barbara Michaud of Belgrade, Shirley Alley and wife Linda of Jonesport; special grandchildren, Marlee Sanborn and Daniel of Bucksport, Mo. and Monica Pollard of Pittsfield, Gregory Pollard of Milford, L. Marie Hjorth and husband David of Veazie, and Richard Hachey of Old Town; sister, Gloria Lemay of Old Orchard Beach; step-grandchildren, Laurie and Matt Dyer of West Gardiner, Chad and Dusty Alley of Nashville, Tenn., Jane McBride and husband John of Addison, Damen Alley and partner Heidi of Addison, Tiffany Alley of Jonesport, Arlena Ryan and husband Scott of Addison, Lewis and wife Rachel of Frenchboro Island, and Terry and wife Jennifer of Windham; 14 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitations 2-3 p.m., Fri., April 23 followed by a 3 p.m. service at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay. Interment 9 a.m., Thurs., April 29 at the Maine Veterans Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.
