Dorothy L. Nickerson, 95, of Portland, formerly Edgecomb and Damariscotta Mills, passed away Feb. 1 at Maine Medical Center. The daughter of Merville and Edith (Shattuck) Weed, she was born in Portland, Jan. 7, 1914.
Dorothy attended schools in Portland and worked as a retail clerk in the grocery field, on her own, to support her eight children. She was known wherever she lived for her crochet talents. For 60 years, she lived between Edgecomb and Damariscotta Mills, moving for a time to Ohio, to be close to her daughter. For the last 20 years of her life, she resided again, in Portland.
She was predeceased by her son, Robert Thurber; as well as four brothers and two sisters.
Dorothy leaves seven children, Donna Jean Emery of Shapleigh, Brenda Pitcher of Jefferson, Dorothy Ethel Brewer of Boothbay, Marion Karns of Ohio, George Nickerson Jr. of Epping, N.H., Paul Nickerson of Port Ricci, Fla., and Constance Rice of Boothbay; 28 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Dorothy will be laid to rest, with a graveside service, at the Sheepscot Cemetery, in the warmth of the spring.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
