Dorothy Mae (Hemingway) Christ, 73, passed away Jan. 21. Dottie was born May 14, 1941 in Portland to Doris Mae and Albert Hemingway. World War II tore the family apart and Dottie and her sister Lucielle Hemingway were brought up by the Cecil Newbert family in North Waldoboro.
After graduating from Waldoboro High School, she studied nursing in Massachusetts. She married her high school sweetheart, James Christ. They bought a farm outside of Friendship where they raised their four children and lived 54 years.
Dot was employed at Osram Sylvania in Waldoboro for 32 years. After “retiring” she ran the lumber, compost and self-storage business they built together.
She was an avid gardener, growing both vegetables and flowers. She canned hundreds of quarts of produce every year for what the kids referred to as “Mumma’s Store.” Dot also enjoyed cooking, knitting, and reading. She was always cheerful and a joy to be around.
Dorothy is survived by sons, Robert and companion Melissa of Waldoboro, and Jon and wife Tami of Bristol; daughters, Doreen Christ of Freeport and Deborah Sanford of Hinkley, Cal.; and special kitty, “Tom-Tom”; sisters, Patricia LaFavore of Portland, and Lucielle and husband Denis Raven of New Mexico; brother, Richard Hemingway of Florida; stepsisters, Carol Burke of Massachusetts, and Sandra Underhill of Tennessee; sister-in-law, Bonnie Christ and companion Marie Mundy of Alfred; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
There will be no visitation services. A private burial will be held in the spring.
