Dorothy Marr Chapman, 95, died peacefully at her home at Schooner Cove, Damariscotta on May 19.
She was born March 27, 1915 in Alna, the second of four daughters of Harrison G. Marr and Edith Boynton Marr. Dorothy grew up in Newcastle and graduated from Lincoln Academy, Class of 1931. Following graduation she was employed at the Newcastle Post Office. Dorothy joined the Damariscotta Baptist Church in 1934 and took an active role in church activities throughout her life. She was married in 1937 to Walter C. Chapman of Damariscotta. Together they raised their three children and were married 65 years. Recently, she has followed the restoration of the church steeple and has yearned for re-installation of the town clock.
She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to cook for her family and friends and was known for her homemade donuts, gumdrop cookies and pies. She enjoyed being “host mother” to Mary Mitchell of Cape Town, South Africa, AFS exchange student at Lincoln Academy in 1966, and she was active in AFS for many years.
After her children were grown, she became a Realtor, active in the Lincoln County Board of Realtors until retirement in 1978. During retirement, she enjoyed being a volunteer switchboard operator at Miles Memorial Hospital. Dorothy was a longtime member of Damariscotta-Newcastle Women’s Club and Lincoln Academy Alumni Association.
She is predeceased by her husband in 2002 and sisters, Muriel Dennis and Constance Freeman.
Surviving are her sister, Louise M. Hanna of Augusta; children, John Chapman and wife Allison of Brunswick, Linda Mahoney and husband Burton of Milford, Conn. and Janice Chapman and husband Bruce Moore of Cape Elizabeth; grandchildren, Karin Mahoney of New York City, Brian Chapman of Topanga, Cal., Kirby Mahoney of New Haven, Conn., Kristopher Mahoney of Derby, Conn., Abigail Chapman of Englewood, Col. and Joseph Chapman of Bethesda, Md.; and five great-grandchildren.
Celebration of life is tentatively planned for 10 a.m., Sat., June 26 at Damariscotta Baptist Church, Pastor Glen Vaughn officiating.
So strong was her desire that her favorite landmark be restored during her lifetime, it is the family’s wish that members of the wider community of central Lincoln County contribute to lift the tower which houses the town clock overlooking Damariscotta Village. In her memory contributions may be made to Landmark Tower Restoration, c/o M. Wellman, The First, 223 Main St., P. O. Box 940, Damariscotta, ME 04543.
