Dorothy T. Speed, 81, of Wiscasset, died July 9 at her residence, the home where she was born.
She was born in Wiscasset on Aug. 21, 1927, a daughter of Ervin S. and Arnieta M. (West) Thompson.
She attended Wiscasset schools and graduated from Wiscasset Academy in 1944. Dorothy started a beauty salon in downtown Wiscasset after graduation from Wilfred Academy of Hair and Beauty Culture in Boston. In 1948 she married Lincoln J. Speed and spent her early married years in Virginia, Massachusetts and Cuba. After her husband passed away, she opened Dot’s Beauty Shop in her home. She operated the shop throughout her life where she enjoyed seeing good friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lincoln J. Speed in 1965; brother, Stanley G. Thompson in 2004; grandson, Edward F. Speed on Aug. 30, 2007; and sister, Ruthena T. Clark on June 4, 2009.
She is survived by two sons, Lincoln J. Speed and wife Martha of Edgecomb, and Jeffrey G. Speed and wife Debbie of Wiscasset; daughter, Suzanne E. Speed of Barter’s Island; many grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial service 4 p.m., Sun., July 19 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, UCC with Rev. John Potter officiating. Gathering of family and friends will follow in the Parish Hall. Burial will be at Sheepscot Cemetery in Sheepscot.
