Douglas “Craig” Plummer, 59, of South Bristol, passed away on Sept. 27 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta. Craig, born on Dec. 15, 1950, was the son of Douglas and Carolyn Erskine Plummer.
Craig spent most of his life in South Bristol and graduated from Lincoln Academy. He was a true Mainer, seldom idle, with varied talents from smoking fish, digging clams and making his famous clam fritters, to winning a fair share of cribbage games. Craig had many jobs. He served in the Navy, drove tractor-trailer trucks throughout the United States, worked as a manager for Muscongus Bay Lobster and Eugley’s Wharf, sterned for local lobsterman, and was a bridge tender in South Bristol and adjacent areas. He was generous with his time and helped out his friends as well as strangers in need. Craig had an inquiring mind and many interests from the internet to the world around him. He treasured the people and places he discovered on his Sunday drives. He often made new friends at out-of-the-way diners or unusual places he found as he traveled those back roads.
Craig was an icon with his striking handle bar mustache and is probably featured in thousands of vacation photos taken by all those people from away who drive over and under the South Bristol swing bridge each year. He could charm people with his huge smile, answering the same bridge questions over and over but his temper was fast to rise towards those who endangered other boats, vehicles and people with reckless behavior.
Craig was predeceased by his parents; and older brother, Stephen in 2008.
Craig is survived by his brother Dale; sister, Andrea; sons, Matthew and Brandon; stepson, Sean Payer; and seven grandchildren.
Honoring Craig’s wishes, there will be no formal service. Remembrances, stories, photos, and condolences can be sent to Friends of Craig, The Bridge House, South Bristol, ME 04568 to be shared at a celebration of life on a bright, warm sunny day in the future.
