Douglas R. Kennedy, 67, of Edgecomb, passed away on May 2 from pulmonary fibrosis. He passed peacefully in the company of his family.
He was born in Concord, N.H., the son of Dorothy Patricia Bodwell and Donald Snow Kennedy.
He attended Westtown Friends School in Pennsylvania and East Tennessee State University.
He was a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE), and Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME), a licensed USCG Captain, a member of Masonic Lodge #711 in Nashville, Tenn., the Scottish Rite, Al Menah Shrine in Nashville, Tenn., and a member of the Edgecomb Congregational Church.
After working several years at Hyde Windlass Co. in Bath, he lived in Nashville, Tenn. and St. Louis, Mo., before returning to Maine to work 18 years at Bath Iron Works. Leaving BIW in 1992, he became a licensed boat captain and conducted charters during the summers.
In 1993, he established Village Car Care, Inc., a car wash facility in Wiscasset, where he could be found tending to business and greeting customers 365 days a year.
He loved the water and prior to a more sedate chartering business, he successfully raced both powerboats and sailboats.
His interests included making models and display cases for museums, and reading and writing, with a focus on community and world affairs.
His childhood years were spent at a waterfront home in Hingham, Mass., and he always considered living anywhere near the ocean to be his true home.
He was predeceased by his brother Donald, of Loveland, Col., in 2002.
Surviving are his wife Betty of Edgecomb; sons, Thomas D. Kennedy and wife Dorothee of Arlington, Mass., and Theodore D. Kennedy and wife Lisa of Derry, N.H.; four grandchildren; brother, David of Redwood City, Cal.; and six nieces and nephews.
His ashes will be cast at sea and a memorial placed at the North Edgecomb Cemetery in Edgecomb. Memorial service 2 p.m., Sat., May 12 at the Edgecomb Congregational Church.
