Dr. Brian Michael Gottlieb, 73, of Whitefield, passed away on Feb. 9.
Brian was born in Philadelphia, Penn. on Feb. 8, 1939 to Maxim Benjamin Gottlieb and Kathryn Maeve McGarrity. He graduated FBK from the University of Pennsylvania in 1957 and went on to attend Penn Medical School.
After internship at Harrisburg Polyclinic, he joined the Army. Following a tour of duty in Germany, he completed his psychiatric residency at Philadelphia State Hospital at Byberry. From 1965 to 1970 he practiced at Monroe Country General in Stroudsburg, Penn., and then moved to Maine to work at Tri-County Mental Health in Lewiston. He was a staff psychiatrist at AMHI until 1982. Two years in Minnesota as Director of Minnesota Security Hospital were followed by a year as Medical Director for the state of Minnesota. He retired in 1994 from the VA hospital at Togus.
He had a lifelong interest in ancient languages, history, medical history and travel.
Dr. Gottlieb is survived by his brother, Carl Sward of New York, N.Y.; wife of 50 years, Martha Jane Espenscheid Gottlieb; children, Daniel of Boston, Mass., Stephen of Boothbay, Noah of Whitefield and Sarah Bailey of Portland; and six beloved grandchildren.
