Dr. David Stiles, 93, formerly of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. and long time summer resident of Southport, died Nov. 21 in Damariscotta. David was born Aug. 26, 1918 in Bronxville, N.Y. to Russell and Viola Sullivan Stiles. He grew up in Scarsdale, N.Y. and attended Phillips Academy Andover, Harvard College, and Harvard Medical School. He enlisted in the Army and was a Captain in the Medical Corps. After his service, he continued his medical training at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York where he met his wife Virginia, now deceased. They moved to Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. after he joined another physician in Irvington, N.Y. and practiced pediatric medicine for the next 30 years.
He had many interests but sailing was his favorite. He spent his childhood summers in New Harbor where he learned to sail and navigate the coast of Maine. During his retirement he was a dedicated volunteer at the Warner Library in Sleepy Hollow.
David is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Zerner and husband John of Dallas, Tex. and Little Diamond Island, and Joanne Conn and husband Steve of Venice, Fla. and Southport; son David M. Stiles of Larkspur, Cal.; grandchildren, Heather S. Conn and husband Wyatt Holt of Townsend, Mass., and Michael S. Conn of Venice, Fla.; and great-grandchildren, Gavin and Colin Holt of Townsend, Mass.
A memorial service celebrating David’s life will be held in the summer of 2012 at the All Saints by the Sea Episcopal Church in Southport.
