Dr. Robert Taylor Beattie, “Bob,” of Newcastle, Maine.
As sure as the sun rises and sets, the tides change, and the winds blow, from the time that we draw the first breath of life, we are in debt to the Creator for one death. Indeed, it is what we do between that first and last breath that marks us here on earth and in the eyes of heaven. Bob passed away quietly in his room at the Lincoln Home on the 19th of August 2016. He was 87 years of age. Between Bob’s first and last breath, he rowed on the University of Pennsylvania Varsity Lightweight crew, served as USAF 1st Lieutenant during the Korean conflict, set up practice as a small town doctor, earned a single-engine pilot license, was selected as the 1967 Delaware Fireman of the Year, served as church vestry and senior warden of Emmanuel on the Green Episcopal Church in Newcastle, Delaware, served as medical director for Hercules Corporation, raised and educated two moderately intelligent, but independent children, was a dedicated husband of 62 years, was “Gramp” to six grandkids, a loyal friend, and steward to a long line of damn good dogs.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, Robert Barrie Beattie and Mildred Taylor; and his wife of 62 years, Jana Voorhis Beattie.
He is survived by his sister, Judith Beattie Klaber of Pittsburg, PA; two children and their families: LTC USA (ret) Taylor and Katy Beattie of Virginia Beach, VA, and Dee and John Dorsey of Ann Arbor, MI; six grandchildren, and a pack of grand-dogs and cats. A celebration of a life well-lived will be held during the summer of 2017, at a time when family and friends can gather at the cabin on Biscay Pond in Maine.
Yes, he completed his job on earth checking out with grace, dignity, and no regrets. Congratulations to you Dad/Gramp on getting about the life that you wanted to live in the service of others.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lincoln Home, 22 River Road, Newcastle, Maine 04553; where he was an active resident participating in numerous activities while enjoying the company good friends.
Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543. Condolences, and messages for the family, may be expressed by visiting: www.StrongHancock.com.
