Duncan Cameron, 59, known to everyone as “Scott”, passed away Oct. 18 at Maine Medical Center, surrounded by loved ones, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Scott, the son of Dorothy and Louis Cameron of Bristol, was born July 29, 1947, and lived most of his life in the Bristol and Pemaquid area. He attended Bristol schools and graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1965.
He joined the Air Force in 1966, and was sent to Language School at the N.S.A. in Monterey, Cal., where he learned Mandarin Chinese. He was later stationed in Okinawa and there began his lifelong love of the Japanese culture.
After the service, he traveled across the country, and eventually returned to Maine and settled on family property in Pemaquid where he later built a home for his family.
For most of his career Scott worked as a job counselor at Coastal Economic Development in Newcastle. He was known for his ability to listen; and his patience and understanding were limitless.
Scott was a gentle and quiet man, deeply spiritual, yet he had a wonderful and quirky sense of humor. He was a lifelong learner and an avid reader. Scott immersed himself in the study of many different cultures and most recently was researching the Civil War.
His talents and interests were many and varied. He was a master chef, a computer whiz, an avid gardener, a lover of all creatures great and small, and appreciated music, dance, theater, and the arts. He enjoyed camping and hiking and with his wife climbed many mountains in Maine, including Mount Washington twice. His favorite hobby was ham radio and he was self-taught in Morse Code.
He is survived by his wife, best friend and soul mate, Donna McMillan; daughter, Chelsea Cameron, a student at The University of Maine; brother, Bruce Cameron and wife Joanna of Edgecomb; sister, June Ricker of Bristol; sister-in-law, Jane Hodgkins of Gorham; brother-in-law, Bruce McMillan of Shapleigh; eleven nieces and nephews; and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Gathering to celebrate his life will be held at a future time.
Arrangements are under the direction of Coast of Maine Cremation and Funeral Service, Waldoboro.
Donations may be made to The Chelsea Cameron Scholarship Fund, Damariscotta Bank & Trust, Box 999, Damariscotta, ME 04543.
