Earl R. Titus Jr., 75, of Thomaston, passed away after a brief illness at the Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland on April 19. He was born in Rockland on March 3, 1935, the son of the late Earl R. Titus Sr. and Jennie Evansky. He attended Rockland schools and was a graduate of Rockland High School, Class of 1954.
Earl was always a hard worker whether it was at a young age helping his grandmother deliver milk using a horse and buggy or driving the school bus while still attending school as a student. After graduation he was a truck driver for Rockland Fruit and Produce making trips between Rockland and New York. He was a meat cutter at Sam Small’s Meat Market, worked for a brief time at Marine Colloids, worked as a guard at the Maine State Prison, worked in the meat department at Sampson’s Supermarket in Damariscotta and for 26 years was a school bus driver for SAD 50.
Earl enjoyed the outdoors, whether it was fishing, ice fishing, hunting, or cutting game; he enjoyed it all. One of his fondest memories was his one and only moose hunt with Deven, Clyson, and David. Having three girls, one of his mottos was “If you married into the family, you had to learn to skin and trim.” He was very proud of his garden, taking the time to teach his family about the different types of things he was growing and how to properly take care of them. He was looked at in the community as a mentor and someone that would always be willing to drop everything to lend a hand, or a tool for that matter. He taught all of his family the importance of hard work.
Earl recently helped his grandson, Deven, in the completion of his Eagle Scout project. He loved his family and was always there for them, putting them first.
He was predeceased by his wife Joan in 2003.
Survivors include his daughters, Karen Anderson and her husband Ernest of Sioux Falls, S.D., Sheila Gould of Thomaston, Dyann Peters and husband Clyson of Thomaston, and Amanda Ware and husband Richard of Bath; son, David Bixby and wife, Connie of Jefferson; grandsons, Heath Anderson and wife Cynthia of Sioux Falls, S.D., Zachary Titus of Rockland and Deven Peters of Thomaston; granddaughters, Renee Cook and husband Robert of Brunswick and Shale Peters of Thomaston; great-grandsons, Logan Ware, of Bath, Tucker Anderson of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Elias Ware of Bath, and Xaiden Cook; great-granddaughters, Caitlyn Ware of Bath, Audrianna Cook of Brunswick and Lilli Anderson of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and son-in-law, Bill Gould.
