Eddie Betit, 62, of Jefferson, died unexpectedly Jan. 2 at his home.
The son of Joseph and Jeannette Betit, he was born on Oct. 17, 1948 in Augusta.
Eddie attended St. Mary’s Grammar School and Cony High School in Augusta.
For the past two decades, he focused his business interests on the environment. He was the founder of The Valley Company, a recycling company based in Whitefield.
Eddie was a brilliant environmental entrepreneur, whose work will live on in many other central Maine businesses.
Previously, Eddie managed the Augusta branch of Browning Ferris Industries and founded Mid-Maine Services, a refuse removal company.
Eddie was an avid collector of antiques, an inveterate bird watcher and claimed to be the best cribbage player in his family.
He instilled his love of the outdoors and reading in all of his children. He was imaginative, intellectually curious and generous to all around him.
In addition to Deborah Marienhoff, his best friend, business and life partner, he is survived by brothers, Paul and wife Debbie of Topsham and David of Hallowell; sister, Liz of Hallowell; son, Jamie
and wife Jennifer of Gardiner; daughters, Darcee and partner Benji Adams of Farmingdale and Jessie of Augusta; grandchildren, Amelia and Molly Betit of Gardiner, Brandon Betit of Manchester and Camden and Eliot Adams of Farmingdale; niece, Brianna Martin of Hallowell; and nephews, C.J. Betit and wife Laura of Gardiner and Chris Betit of Topsham.
Friends may visit 5-8 p.m., Wed., Jan. 5 at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Memorial mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Thurs., Jan. 6 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Ave., Augusta.
