Edward A. Ludwig, 89, of Orono, formerly of Washington, died Nov. 13 at Dirigo Pines in Orono. He was born Feb. 26, 1922 in Washington to Frederick and Ina Clary Ludwig. He grew up in Washington and graduated from Washington High School. After high school he worked in a Portland shipyard. He was drafted in the U.S. Army during WWII and was honorably discharged as a sergeant.
He married Marjorie Turner on Dec. 8, 1945. Ed and Marjorie moved back to Washington to run the family store, F.L. Ludwig & Son, “the oldest business in town,” which they ran together until 1973. Edward also became a postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in 1953, and postmaster in 1961 until his retirement. Ed and Marjory spent 10 years of their retirement in Silver Springs, Fla.
Edward was very community-minded. He belonged to the Washington Fire Department, Evening Star Grange, and VFW. He was also a Past Master of Mt. Olivet Masonic Lodge, founding member of the Washington Hill and Gully Riders Snowmobile Club, Deputy Sheriff, and barbershop singer.
Family was very important to Edward. All work was valuable to him whether it was tending to his large gardens, playing cribbage, working in the store or helping the community, he always gave 110 percent.
He was predeceased by his parents, four siblings, and step-mother, Gertrude Ludwig.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marjorie Ludwig of Orono; daughters, Valerie Griffin and husband Michael Griffin of Orono, and Joanne Shuman and husband Timothy of Jefferson; son, Michael Ludwig and wife Amy of Bangor; and grandchildren, Nicholaus Shuman of Biddeford, Joshua Griffin and wife Susan of Bangor, Lyndsy Shuman of Orono, Kate Ludwig of Philadelphia, Penn., and Benjamin Ludwig of Biddeford.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Fri., Nov. 18 at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Funeral 11 a.m., Sat., Nov. 19 at the funeral home followed by a reception at the Mt. Olivet Masonic Lodge in Washington from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. A committal service with military honors will be held at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.
