Edward G. Hawkes Jr., of North Bath, passed away on July 1 on the farm with the love of his life, Marjorie, by his side.
He was born on July 8, 1928 in Bath, the son of Edward and Harriet McNinch Hawkes. Upon the passing of his mother, he was raised by his grandmother, Bertha Tyler. On June 12, 1948 after knowing her for six years, he married his love, Marjorie Rogers in Bath.
He was employed for the City of Bath Public Works, then at Hyde Windlass and Bath Iron Works.
He left to venture on his own in self-employment. In 1952, he and Marjorie purchased “The Farm” raising chickens, other farm animals and soon raising the geraniums he was so known for. In 1973 they opened their second location in Wiscasset with the third location being opened in-town Bath.
When he wasn’t busy working on The Farm, he could be found on the water sailing with Marjorie, going to many locations but his more memorable ones were to Boston Harbor for the bicentennial and spending many summers in Penobscot Bay.
As the seasons changed, his hobbies did as well. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed golfing, skiing, hunting and fishing with his children and grandchildren. The other place he could be found was in the field every summer haying hundreds of bales of hay.
His pride and joy were his children and grandchildren whom he was extremely close to.
He is predeceased by his parents; and grandchildren, Mickey Misner and Parker Leeman.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; sons, Gary and wife Susan of Cundy’s Harbor, Kevin and wife Ada of Bethel, Mark and wife Marjorie of Phippsburg, and Scott of Brunswick; daughters, Karen of North Bath and Suzanne Misner and husband Mickey of Westport Island, and Beth Hawkes-Campbell and husband Dennis of Whitefield; grandchildren, Jimmy Oliver, Jean Ann Williams, Jennifer Thomas, Gary Hawkes Jr., Heath Hawkes, Cory Hawkes, Stacey Anestis, Jarrod Hawkes, Amie Hawkes, Chris Hawkes, Tiffany Leeman, Scottie Hawkes, Brian Hawkes, and Nate and Nick Leeman; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sisters, Edith Hill of Phippsburg and Joan Fogg of Jefferson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
