Edythe H. Slocum, 89, of Damariscotta, passed away at Miles Memorial Hospital on Jan. 30 with her family present. She was born on April 25, 1919, in Jersey City, N.J. She married Allan L. Slocum, her childhood sweetheart, in 1941. They had three children, and enjoyed a relationship of love and friendship for more than 60 years until Allan’s death in 2002.
In 1956, Ede and Al moved their young family to Damariscotta. Several years later, Edythe went to work at The First National Bank of Damariscotta, when it was located in the Day’s Block on Main Street. She was employed at the bank for more than 20 years until she retired in 1982. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, and was a longtime member of the Miles Memorial Hospital League and the Damariscotta Baptist Church. During her retirement, she was a hospital volunteer, working on the switchboard. She also served as secretary for the board of the People to People clothing exchange.
Edythe and her husband enjoyed taking car trips and traveled in New England, Canada, Virginia, Florida and New Jersey. In her later years she enjoyed observing nature from her deck, dining out with her children, reading, and listening to music. She loved watching the Lawrence Welk show.
Edythe was a strong woman who was also very sensitive to the feelings and needs of others. She always put the happiness and well being of her family first. She had a good sense of humor, and kept it until the end of her life.
She is survived by her daughters, Nancy of Portland, and Jane of Damariscotta; son, Roy of Connecticut; brother, Warren Holland of New Jersey; granddaughter, Nicole Moss and husband Colin of Cumberland; grandson, Michael Hanna of Damariscotta; grandchildren, Emily and Ben Slocum, and their mother, Deborah of Connecticut; great-granddaughters, Leah and Holland Moss of Cumberland; Michael’s fiancee, Jessica York and her son, Mason of Damariscotta.
Details about a memorial service will be announced in the spring.
