Egbert B. Lane, 80, of Round Pond, passed on Nov. 29 at his home in Round Pond. Born in Trenton, N.J. on May 7, 1930, he was the son of Egbert and Marion (Brock) Lane.
Egbert spent his early life in Massachusetts and New Jersey. He attended Hebron Academy, which started a life-long love for the state of Maine. While at Hebron he played hockey, and would go on to play in a semi-pro hockey league throughout New England and parts of Canada.
After school he joined the U.S. Navy where he served during the Korean War. While in the Navy, he married Marilyn Hampton. The couple moved to Cape Cod where they would raise their two daughters.
Egbert worked as a plumber for many years, but also worked in security for the Eli Lilly family, and later as a caretaker for the Barton Estate in South Bristol. He loved being in the woods, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was skilled at woodworking, building everything from furniture to his home in Round Pond. He was an avid dog lover, especially black labs.
He is survived by his daughters, Mari Rose and husband Joe of Round Pond and Judi Wiernicki and husband Chris of Columbia, S.C.; brothers, John B. Lane of Bristol and Howard Lane of Waquoit, Mass.; grandchildren, Erin Rose, Kathryn Rose, Heidi Rose, Patrick Rose and Tiffany Wiernicki; five great-grandchildren; and his beloved black lab, Jenny.
Memorial service 10 a.m., Sat., Dec. 4 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. He will be laid to rest in the New Harbor Cemetery following the service.
