Elisabeth Harkness (Kuck) Lang, 101, of Damariscotta, known to most as Betty, died June 25 in Damariscotta.
Born Nov. 2, 1907 in New York City, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Cecil E. and Grace (Harkness) Kuck.
She spent her childhood in Mount Vernon, N.Y., and attended the Mount Vernon schools. She graduated with honors from Barnard College and the Columbia School of Journalism. In 1933, she married Dr. Theodore R. Lang who predeceased her in 1997. They lived in New York City, Bronxville, Chappaqua, and Millbrook, N.Y. before moving to Nobleboro in 1983. In 1998 she moved to Hodgdon Green, an assisted living facility in Damariscotta. She enjoyed living there, proudly called it home and considered all the residents and staff her family.
She was an avid nature lover and birdwatcher. She was passionate about reading and enjoyed the challenge of the daily New York Times crossword puzzle. She looked forward to learning something new every day and was so pleased and interested when visitors stopped by with news of themselves and the community. She greeted everyone with a sparkle in her bright blue eyes and her delightful heartwarming smile.
She is survived by her son, Gary and wife Kathy; daughter, Deborah and partner Richard Loren; three grandchildren, Michelle, David and Hope; two great-grandchildren, Heather and Brandon; niece, Barbara; and nephew, Roy.
At Betty’s request there will be a private family graveside service at the Dunbar Cemetery in Nobleboro, officiated by Rev. Mary Ann Hoy of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Newcastle. Plans are being made for a celebration of her life later this summer in the garden at Hodgdon Green.
Those wishing to do so are invited to make a memorial donation in her honor to Hodgdon Green, c/o The Eldercare Network of Lincoln County, P.O. Box 652, Damariscotta, ME 04543 or to Miles Home Health and Hospice, 40 Belvedere Rd., Damariscotta, ME 04543.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.
