Elizabeth Ellen Johnson, “Betty,” 84, of Wiscasset, passed away at her home on May 11, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Bath on Feb. 6, 1940, she was the daughter of Merrill and Stella Dickinson.
Betty grew up in Bath, where she attended local schools and graduated from Morse High School. Out of school she married her husband, Stanley Johnson, and the couple would start their family. She worked for the town of Wiscasset for 29 years as a secretary for the board of selectmen.
Betty was a 50-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was also a member of the Female Charitable Organization. She enjoyed many years of quilting with her quilting friends and the many laughs they shared. She enjoyed tending to her beautiful gardens. Betty was also an avid knitter and gave countless baby afghans to area hospitals.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, William Dickinson.
She is survived by her husband of over 65 years, Stanley Johnson, of Wiscasset; three children, Jerry Johnson and his wife, Joanne, of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., Jennifer Prendergast and her husband, John, of Canton, Mass., and Shelley Schmal and her husband, Douglas, of Wiscasset; two sisters, Dianna MacDonald and Barbara Dickinson; and four grandchildren, Samuel Schmal, Jillian Johnson, Meryl Prendergast, and Lydia Prendergast.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., on Monday, May 20 at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Wiscasset. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Beacon Hospice, 5 Community Drive, Suite A, Augusta, ME 04330.
