Elizabeth (Betty) Walton, 87, of Boothbay Harbor, died Aug. 17 at St. Andrews Hospital.
Betty was born in the District of Columbia, the daughter of Morton Wood and Edith Hall Wood. She went to the District of Columbia schools, and the College of William and Mary where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta, and the Marshall Wythe School of Law. She practiced law for several years in Westport, Conn.
Betty married John D. Walton of Louisville, Ky. Although she did not practice law in Kentucky, she became a probation officer for the Jefferson County Juvenile Court.
Betty was a member of Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church in Louisville and served terms as president and secretary of the Congregation. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter E, and the Compass Club in Louisville.
Her husband’s grandparents, the W.P. Davenports, had one of the early log cabins in Sprucewold, Boothbay Harbor. The Waltons spent nearly every vacation in Sprucewold, and when John retired, they moved to St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor.
She was a member of the Midcoast Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Edgecomb, and transferred her membership in P.E.O. to Chapter F. in Rockland.
Betty loved to read, play bridge, sew and sail. In Kentucky, she belonged to several bridge and reading groups. In Maine, she enjoyed the Book Club at St. Andrews Village and sailing on Linekin Bay.
Betty is survived by her husband, John D. Walton, of Boothbay Harbor; one daughter, Catherine Sell of Whitefield; one son, Frederic Walton of Lynchburg, Va.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial service 2 p.m., Fri., Aug. 25 at Midcoast Unitarian Universalist, meeting at Edgecomb Town Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be sent to St. Andrews Hospital and the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
