Erin G. Cummings, 48, of Westport Island, died Feb. 11 at a Brunswick Hospital.
She was born in Summit, N.J., a daughter of Robert and Ruth (Quin) Garrity. She attended Chatham schools and in 1978 graduated from Chatham High School. She then attended Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania, graduating in 1982 with a B.Sc. degree in Social Work. Erin was employed at a variety of programs aimed at supporting troubled teenagers. On Aug. 19, 1989 she married W. Mark Cummings and in 1996 they moved to Westport Island. Since 2002, and until her passing, she worked at the Chewonki Foundation in Wiscasset, which afforded her the opportunity to continue to work with youths, something she was extremely passionate about. In addition to her work at Chewonki, Erin (and Mark) had acted as foster parents for numerous Maine children. Erin thoroughly enjoyed her life in Maine, the “small town” lifestyle, and the close relationships that she developed over the years with all her friends and neighbors. Erin truly enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, and most especially spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her parents, Robert and Ruth Garrity of Morris Township, N.J.; husband, Mark; son, Christopher; two daughters, Casey and Kerry, all of Westport Island; three brothers, Robert Garrity of Denville, N.J., Thomas Garrity of Booten, N.J., and Kevin Garrity and wife Ann of New Providence, N.J.; two sisters, Patricia Lowe and husband Darren of Chatham, N.J., and Noreen Price and husband Peter of Madison, N.J.; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
