Estella Hess Gair, 94, of Damariscotta, passed away on the morning of Sept. 19 at her home. Born in Chicago, Ill. on Jan. 22, 1918, she was the daughter of Blair and Anna (Hess) Gair.
Estella grew up in Chicago, and as a young woman spent some time living in the Southwest for health reasons. She lived in many places during her lifetime, including Chicago, Florida and New York, where she served CitiBank for over 33 years. She retired in 1975, as head teller at the branch where she had spent most of her working life.
Following the death of her father in 1956, she and her mother purchased a home in South Bristol. Estella’s mother spent summers there, and Estella her vacations, until they sold the property in July of 1973. At that time they purchased a property in Damariscotta.
Following her retirement in 1975, she moved to Maine with her mother where they settled down in their Damariscotta home, and became involved in various civic organizations and the Damariscotta Methodist Church.
Estella and her mother shared a wonderful and uncommon bond, and she cared for, and looked after, her mother from her retirement until Anna passed away in 1978.
She is survived by her many friends, including Sigrid Sproul, Robert Fitzgerel, and neighbor Harriet Bridges.
Funeral service for Estella 10 a.m., Thurs., Sept. 27 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. She will be laid to rest with her mother in the Hillside Cemetery in Damariscotta.
