Ethel Carver Baker, 77, of Jefferson, died Oct. 17 at her home in Jefferson. She was born Sept. 6, 1931 in Gardiner, a daughter of Irving and Lillian Ware Carver. She grew up in Gardiner and Jefferson. She graduated from Bessie High School in Albion.
She worked as a telephone operator for many years in Albion. During WWII she and her husband moved to Connecticut where she worked as an operator. After the war she moved back to Jefferson. She worked as a switchboard operator at Augusta General Hospital until she retired.
She was a member of the Jefferson First Baptist Church and the Willow Grange in Jefferson. She was an avid reader and loved to play cards.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Clifford Lee and by her second husband, Sherwood Baker.
She is survived by four sons, Thomas Lee of Jefferson, Mark Lee of Fargo, N.D., John Lee of Jefferson and David Lee of Skowhegan; daughter, Barbara Hodgkins of Jefferson; brothers, Forrest Carver of Tacoma, Wash. and David Carver of Beacon Falls, Conn.; sister, Lucille Carver of Augusta and 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
