Eva L. Chickering, 81, of Bristol, a longtime educator, passed away Aug. 25 at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta.
Born in Walpole, Jan. 5, 1925, she was a daughter of Clarence C. and Mabel G. (Chapman) Chickering.
Eva attended Bristol schools, graduating from Bristol High School in the Class of 1942. She worked for a time, first at Poland’s Drug Store and later at French’s Hardware in Damariscotta.
As a young woman, Eva began her teaching career first in South Bristol, later going to the one room schoolhouse on the Pond Road in Newcastle. She attended Gorham State College and Farmington State College, where she earned her degrees, while still teaching. The majority of her career was spent teaching second grade in Richmond, where she became principal prior to retiring.
She loved to travel and eat at nice restaurants. A highlight of her life was an automobile trip across the United States, ending in California.
Eva is survived by three brothers and two sisters, Clarence Chickering and wife Patricia of Chicopee, Mass., Edward Chickering and wife Christine of Bristol, Wayne Chickering and wife Sharon of Northampton, Mass., Virginia Brackett and husband Douglas of Bristol, and Faye Cunningham and husband Alex of Bristol; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends who will miss her.
Eva was predeceased by two sisters, Mary McDonald and Donna Anderson.
Friends are invited to be with the family 10-11 a.m., Tues., Aug. 29, where a service to honor Eva will follow at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. She will be laid to rest at Bristol Mills Cemetery.
