Evelyn M. Winchenbach, 92, of Friendship, passed away peacefully at the Glenridge Nursing Home in Augusta on Sept. 27. She was born in Friendship on July 30, 1920, the daughter of the late Charles and Nellie Wincapaw Wallace.
She grew up in Friendship and attended local schools and was a student at Rockland High School. During her teenage years she worked as a babysitter for local families around town.
After school she met and married Maynard Winchenbach and through his hard work she was able to stay home and take care of her family. A task that she thoroughly enjoyed, she worked tirelessly around the house taking care of her children and the day-to-day details. She was truly devoted to her family. She also spent some time working as a seamstress at J.B. Pearson in Thomaston.
She was a member of the 4H Club where she was able to working on her various sewing projects. She was involved in the grange and was a member of the Acorn Grange #418 in Cushing. She was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church where she also would volunteer as a Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed bowling and could usually be found playing a few strings at Depatsy’s Lanes in Waldoboro. She also loved to play cards and work on crossword puzzles.
She was truly devoted to her family and worked tirelessly to make sure that all of their needs were met. She enjoyed spending time with her family and any time that her children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren could be around was a true joy for her.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Maynard Winchenbach; brother, Robert Wallace; sisters, Ava Wallace and Annie Hutchins.
Survivors include sons, Kendall Winchenbach and wife Bette of Bangor and Gary Winchenbach and wife Joanne of Gardiner; daughter Janet Neubig and husband John of Friendship; brothers, Douglas Wallace of Waldoboro, and J. Harlan Wallace of Friendship; grandchildren, David Neubig and wife Yana, Dwayne Neubig and wife Anya, Shirley Moody and husband Harry, Kimberley Tracey, Adam Winchenbach, and Jaime Winchenbach; and great-grandsons, Joshua Neubig and Cody Tracey.
Time of visitation 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Mon., Oct. 1 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Celebration of life 1 p.m., Tues., Oct. 2, also at the funeral home, with Rev. Jane MacIntyre officiating. Burial will follow at the family lot at the Village Cemetery in Friendship.
