Evelyn Simmons, 94, of Waldoboro, passed away peacefully at her home on Aug. 11 surrounded by her family.
Evelyn was born on Nov. 16, 1913, the daughter of Perley and Sadie Burns Winchenbaugh, attended Waldoboro schools and graduated from Waldoboro High School as class Valedictorian in 1930. After high school she continued her education at Gorham Normal School, graduating in 1932.
After graduation, she taught school in a one-room school house in Dutch Neck for 14 years. She was then employed as a bookkeeper for the Lash Boat Yard in Friendship, BIW and when Hood s Dairy Plant opened in Waldoboro, she worked there before going back to teaching the first and second grades at the Broad Cove School.
She married her husband, Sidney in 1939.
She was a member of the Waldoboro Senior Citizens, The Waldoboro American Legion Auxiliary, The Maine State Retired Teachers Association, The National Education Association, Waldoboro Historical Society and the Audubon Society. She attended the Baptist church in Waldoboro.
Her hobbies included crafts, playing beano, being outdoors, flower gardens, and spending time with her great grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling, fishing and volunteering her time at Fieldcrest Manor.
She is predeceased by her husband, Sidney in 1943, and her son, Wayne Simmons, Sr.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Brenda Simmons of Waldoboro; three grandchildren, Grace Shorey of Alna, Vicky Conary of Warren, and Wayne Simmons, Jr. of Ellsworth; seven great grandchildren, Rachel Winchenbach, Hillary, Miranda, and Mallory Conary of Warren, Brandon and Brianna Shorey of Alna, and Wyatt Simmons of Ellsworth; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service 11 a.m., Wed., Aug, 20 at Sweetland Cemetery in Waldoboro.
