F. George Higham, Jr., a 50-year resident of Paoli, Penn., passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of April 5 due to complications of diabetes. He was a pillar of the community and a noted leader in many personal and community activities.
A 1945 graduate of The Haverford School, Mr. Higham enjoyed a lifelong commitment to his alma mater and in 2004 was awarded a special “alumnus of the year” award for his loyal dedication and service to the school.
After attending Swarthmore College, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Following his father’s footsteps, he entered the insurance business in the late 1940’s and became president of the F.G. Higham Agency upon the death of his father. He was also branch manager of the Philadelphia office of the Great West Life Assurance Company for many years.
Mr. Higham served as president of the board of directors of Northwestern Institute of Psychiatry, Nationalities Service Center, Malvern Institute and Movement Theatre International. He also serviced on the board of Delaware Valley Hospital Association.
He was a member of the Colonial Society, Pennsylvania Sons of the American Revolution, and the Newcomen Society. He was a lifetime member of the Union League of Philadelphia and The Merion Cricket Club.
Known by his Maine friends as George, he especially enjoyed “hauling in” flounders from Little Island Channel, at New Harbor.
He is survived by his wife, Diana; son, Gregg, daughter, Lee Tinker; and sister, Barbara Winner.
Memorial service Mon., May 7 at St. David’s Church, 763 D. Valley Forge Rd., Radnor, Penn.
