Flora Susanne Van Mater, 59, of South Portland passed away unexpectedly on June 17 at her residence. Her family has a summer cottage in Chamberlain.
She was born in New Brunswick, N.J. on Nov. 29, 1950, the daughter of John S. Van Mater Sr. and Flora (Faulkingham) Van Mater and attended Endicott College in Massachusetts. She resided in Colorado, then Keene, N.H., and finally moved to South Portland.
Susanne was a funny, funny woman with a wonderful sense of humor, who enjoyed helping others and counseling them through their problems. She was an artistic, elegant woman and a beautiful spirit.
She was predeceased by her parents, John S. Van Mater Sr. and Flora Van Mater.
She is survived by her children, Lindsey McFarland and husband Sean and grandson Rio of Healdsburg, Cal., Travis Fullmer-Smith of Keene, N.H. and Stephanie Smith of South Portland; sister, Nancy V. Schoeller and husband John of Danbury, N.H.; brother, John S. Van Mater Jr. and wife Lisa of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; nieces, Diana S. Akins of Worcester, Mass., and Kathryn and Jacqueline Van Mater of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; and nephew, John J. Schoeller of Wakefield, R.I.
Visitation was held June 23 at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland.
