Forest Brown, Sr., 85, of Hackensack, N.J. and formerly of Whitefield, passed away June 11 in Hackensack, N.J. Forest was born in Whitefield on May 4, 1923, a son of Nathan and Lucy Hassen Brown.
When he was younger, Forest worked in the woods of Maine until he moved to New Jersey in 1964. He was employed at a machine shop and most recently as a sexton of the Second Reformed Church in Hackensack, N.J., until his sickness in 2007. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII with service in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Brown-Bartlett-Brown of Hackensack, N.J.; six children, Kathy Wolfert of Houston, Tex., Mary Mullens of Pittston, Faye Joslyn of Windsor, Hope Atwater of Farmingdale, Forest Brown, Jr. of Augusta, and Vicki Overlock of Winthrop; sister, Lydia Scott of Whitefield; brother-in-law, Floyd Reynolds; two sisters-in-law, Emerly Brown and Joanna Trott; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; six step-children, Robert Bartlett of Illinios, Cynthia Miville of Chelsea, James Bartlett of Windsor, Wanda Mills of Whitefield, Dana Bartlett of Portland, and Paul Bartlett of Lewiston; 19 step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours 6-9 p.m., Thurs., June 26 at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. Funeral service 11:30 a.m., Fri., June 27 at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow in the Whitefield Cemetery. Following the committal service a gathering will be held at the Gardiner American Legion Hall, Griffin St., Gardiner.
