Frances Doughty Cunningham, 91, of Union, passed away Dec. 23 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport.
She was born June 3, 1916, in Washington, a daughter of Edward Pierpont and Gladys Mears Pierpont. She grew up in South Liberty and attended local schools in Washington and Liberty. She graduated from the Walker High School in Liberty, class of 1934. She attended Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in Portland.
She married Gilbert Doughty on Feb. 29, 1936 and they made their home in Liberty, South Hope, North Yarmouth and Union. She was a homemaker.
She started the school lunch program in Union. She worked every summer raking blueberries with her family. She worked for the Monmouth Canning Company, Edward C. Cutting Blueberry Company, Thurston Brothers Casket Company, and Van Baalen’s, Hill’s Nursing Home and she ran Sterling House in Union.
She was a member of the Orient Chapter OES where she was a Past Matron. She was also a member of the Pioneer Grange, charter member of the Union Historical Society, charter member of the Union Senior Citizens, and the Peoples United Methodist Church in Union.
She enjoyed gardening, doing genealogy, running, skiing and snowshoeing. She also made hooked rugs, and painted with oils. She loved spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren. She and Gilbert traveled to all 50 states and enjoyed square dancing together.
She married Carl W. Cunningham on Nov. 22, 1995 and they made their home in Union.
She is predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Gilbert N. Doughty; son, William A. Doughty; daughter-in-law, Cary Doughty; sister, Muriel Kenoyer; brother, Berkley Cunningham; and great-grandson, Donald J. Doughty.
She is survived by her husband, Carl W. Cunningham of Union; sons, Eugene R. Doughty and wife Deanna of Chester, Va., Paul V. Doughty and wife Charlotte of Union, and Philip K. Doughty, Sr. of Warren and Orange Park, Fla.; daughter, Sylvia Y. Becker and husband Dennis of Union; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Doughty of California, Md.; stepsons, Carl W. Cunningham, Jr. and wife Betsy of Waldoboro and Wayne Cunningham and wife Cynthia of Union; brother, Charles T. Pierpont of Ellsworth; sister-in-law, Jean Cunningham of Liberty; 18 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great grandchildren.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Thurs., Dec. 27 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro with an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m.
Funeral 1 p.m., Fri., Dec. 28 at the Peoples United Methodist Church, Union.
