Fred Wayne Hanna, 79, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 7, 1945 to Mel and Catherine (Benner) Hanna, Fred grew up and spent his life in New Harbor.
After graduating from Bristol High School in 1963, he served his country in the U.S. Navy. While stationed in Jacksonville, he was able to experience many things, including venturing into the Mediterranean Sea.
Returning home in 1967, Fred applied one of his many skills as an incredibly talented carpenter, following in his father’s footsteps. He not only built his own home, but more recently built a beautiful cabin on the Sheepscot River, where his family can gather “at camp” for generations to come. His craftsmanship was a testament to his dedication to providing for, and cherishing, his loved ones.
Fred spent many years at Bath Iron Works, retiring at the age of 66, after a long and fulfilling career, as what he called a “tin knocker.” Retirement didn’t slow him down; he continued to pour his energy into his passions and family.
In 1987, Fred married his best friend, and the love of his life, Nancy Chaney. They were inseparable for 37 years, and together created a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Family was everything to Fred. He was an exceptional son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. His favorite moments were spent surrounded by loved ones, whether at holidays, special occasions, the annual family gathering on Old Bristol Days, or his regular visits simply sharing stories and laughter. He took immense pride in the lives of his children, and expressed his love and feelings to his family openly and affectionately.
Fred had a deep love for the water, enjoying fishing, boating, kayaking, and time at “The Shore.” He also enjoyed spending time camping, competitive cowboy shooting, and woodworking. Alongside Nancy, he crafted countless pieces, leaving behind tangible items of his creativity and love.
With his great sense of humor, Fred could always be found smiling, laughing, and sharing stories with those around him. He was loved by all that had the pleasure of knowing him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. Fred leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and laughter.
Fred was predeceased by his parents; and brother, Kenny.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Hanna; his children, Marcie (Brad) Davis, Michael (Audrey) Hanna, Doug Beane, Patty (David) Ames, Rick (Jeanene) Beane; his grandchildren, Cody (Allie) Monroe, Madison Clarke, Lily Hanna, Adam (Molly) Johns, Nick (Lindsay) Ames, Abby (Josh) Seiders, and Elizabeth Beane; his siblings, Lynne (Buddy) Blank and Andy (Patti) Ungerson; he also leaves behind many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends; as well as his special dog, Lucy, who Fred loved dearly.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Strong Hancock Funeral Home in Damariscotta. In true Fred fashion, there will be a celebration of life held during the annual family gathering during Old Bristol Days this summer.
Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta, ME 04543. Condolences, and messages for his family, may be expressed by visiting stronghancock.com.
