Freeda Carrol (Morrison) Brown, 93, of Wiscasset, passed away March 28 at the Cove’s Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta.
She was born in Bradford, on Nov. 21, 1914, the daughter of Frank Morrison and Janie (Curtis) Morrison.
Mrs. Brown attended schools in Skowhegan and Solon.
Mrs. Brown moved from Solon to Bucksport and then to Wiscasset where she lived for over 60 years. She had many friends and many loving neighbors.
Mrs. Brown prepared and served school lunches in the Wiscasset Middle School cafeteria; and worked at Edgecomb’s former famous roadside eateries, the Dodge Inn and The Dog House. In 1963, Mrs. Brown completed a Certified Nurses Aid course at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor and retired from St. Andrews Hospital in 1989, at the age of 75, after 27 years of service.
Mrs. Brown’s hobbies and interests included vegetable and flower gardening, knitting, sewing and quilting (she made a quilt for every girl and grand-daughter in her family). She loved heating her home with wood, tending to her house plants, taking care of her cat “Goldie”, keeping the cookie jar full, visiting with family and friends, taking walks around the neighborhood she loved, and playing cards with her neighbor. Mrs. Brown was well-known for her never-ending supply of pickles and jams, many of the ingredients for which she grew in her own garden.
In the 1960’s, Mrs. Brown hiked to the very top of Mt. Katahdin with her husband and son. She loved taking trips, especially enjoying her frequent trips to Blue Hill to visit her late dear friend of over 60 years. She has traveled to Quebec with her daughter-in-law and also to her ancestral home, Scotland.
Mrs. Brown was a member of the Wiscasset’s First Congregational Church and has been a member of the church’s Organ Society for many years.
Mrs. Brown is predeceased by her only sister, Ruby Brackett, and two daughters, Carol B. Campbell and Dona J. Spencer.
Survivors include son, Basil Brown, and wife, Carol of Cape Elizabeth; seven grandchildren, Lucinda Hyson of Boothbay, Maurice L. Hyson, Sr. of Edgecomb, Michelle (Hyson) Farnham and husband Fredrick of Boothbay Harbor, Debbie (Spencer) Burnham of Dresden, Christopher Spencer and wife Linda of Anchorage, Alas., Rachel (Spencer) Garcia of Whitefield, and Shari (Spencer) Bryant and husband John of Canaan; 15 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of her life 12 p.m., Sat., April 12 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset with Rev. John Potter officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow in the Parish Hall.
