G. Wells Anderson, 83, of East Concord, N.H., died May 26 at Pleasant View Nursing Home.
The son of Gordon Oscar Anderson and Helen (Gamage) Anderson, Wells was born in Fairhaven, Mass. and raised in Damariscotta. He was a member of the 1949 Lincoln Academy state championship basketball team. He was a graduate of Bowdoin College and Harvard Law School.
His professional career included working for Judge Thornton Lorimer whom he regarded as a role model. He served as Merrimack County attorney, then assistant attorney general for the state of New Hampshire in the 1960s, and several years as a senior partner for the Concord firm of Hall, Morse, Anderson, and Spinella. He was the director of charitable trusts for the State of New Hampshire in the 1970s. He served on the Concord School Board, Concord City Council, and on the Board of Trustees at Coe-Brown Academy in Northwood. He served on the NHBA Board of Governors from 1980-83.
An avid traveler and outdoorsman, Wells climbed all of New Hampshire’s 4,000-footers, and skied Tuckerman’s Ravine with his sons. He also spent many happy hours sailing off the Maine coast and traveling throughout the U.S. and Europe.
He was predeceased by his son, Kris Anderson; brother, Wayne Anderson; and sister, Kristin Johnson.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Maureen Anderson; son, Todd Anderson of Acton, Mass.; grandson, Kevin Anderson of Lexington, Mass.; daughter, Lauren Reilly of Leonardo, N.J.; granddaughter, Jessica Reilly of Seattle, Wash.; step-son, Jeff Langan and wife Joanne Normandin of Natick, Mass.; and sister, Susan Reed and husband Charles of Manchester. He also leaves his former wife and mother of his children, Joanne Bailey Anderson Campbell of Newcastle.
Always kind, soft-spoken, and humble, his gentle manner, ready smile and twinkling blue eyes will be missed by all who knew him.
A service will be held at 6 p.m., Tues., May 31 at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 274 Pleasant St. in Concord, N.H. A reception will be held immediately afterward. Family and friends are invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Care for the Anderson family has been entrusted to the Bennett Funeral Home of Concord, N.H.
