George F. Sefcik, 78, of Edgecomb, passed away at his home in Edgecomb, with his loving family by his side. Born in Belford, N.J. on April 30, 1946, George Sefcik served in the Army before becoming an auto mechanic. He went on to teach high school auto shop, spending 20 years training the next generation of mechanics.
Always a “doer” George could frequently be found lending a hand to friends and family with a car repair or DIY project. He was a classic car and model train enthusiast, skier, duck hunter, woodworker, and tinkerer.
Following his retirement to Edgecomb, his most recent volunteer positions were with the Railway Village Museum in Boothbay and Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens.
Most importantly, he was a devoted husband to his wife, Susan (Apgar) Sefcik, with whom he recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, and a loving father to four daughters, Debbie (Butch Burdge) Sefcik, Carrie Sefcik, Susie (William Miller) Sefcik, and Kathleen Sefcik.
George is survived by siblings, William (Barbara) Sefcik, Donald (Rosemary) Sefcik, Susan Sefcik, Carol Hoffman, Edward Sefcik, and John Sefcik; grandchildren, Jessica Burdge, Chelsea (David) McCrystal, Katrina Burdge, and Cody Burdge, Emmett Miller, and Owen Miller; and four great-grandchildren, who will lovingly remember the antics of their “Papa George.” He was predeceased by his parents, Clara and William Sefcik; and sister, Nancy Geiger.
He was proud to be called “Uncle George” by many nieces and nephews, both biological and honorary.
George was a three-time cancer survivor who persevered and maintained a sense of humor until his final day. He will always be remembered and appreciated by those who had the good fortune to know and love him.
Plans will be made for a celebration of George’s life at a later time. In lieu of flowers, George’s family encourages you to make a donation in his honor to a local vocational education program.
Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta, ME 04543.
