George Henry Carter, 75, of Coopers Mills, passed away Dec. 17 at the Country Manor Nursing Home. Experiencing the miracle of death, George shed his earthly body and its burdens and went home to be with his heavenly Father.
He was born in Gardiner, Aug. 27, 1932, the son of Ralph Carter and Freda (Bodway) Carter.
He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army, stationed in France, from 1952-1954.
George worked for the State of Maine for over 20 years, ending his career as a government auditor. He spent 22 years teaching children in church clubs and Sunday school about the ways of the Lord. He was affiliated with the Calvary Bible Baptist Church in Whitefield.
George enjoyed simple pleasures throughout his life. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and cribbage, and taking vacations with his family. He especially treasured trips with his family to Canada, whether it was to New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, or Prince Edward Island. He was known for his wit and dry humor and his perseverance in overcoming physical difficulties and obstacles in his life.
He was predeceased by his mother, Freda (Bodway) Carter; father, Ralph Carter; and brothers, Ralph and Norman Carter.
Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of over 50 years, Doris R. Carter of Coopers Mills; daughters, Deborah Keyes and husband Dale of Pittston and Nicky Gibson and husband Lyle; sons, Anthony Gould and wife Heidi of Mount Vernon, Stephen Carter and wife Yvonne of Whitefield, and Michael Carter and wife Jo-Ellen of Norway; sister, Martha Davis and husband Clint of Woolwich; brother, Warren Carter and wife Anita of Corpus Christi, Tex; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
There are no public visiting hours.
Funeral 2 p.m., Sat., Dec. 22 at Calvary Bible Baptist Church, Whitefield. A gathering for family and friends to celebrate George’s life will follow the service at the church.
Burial will be in the spring at the Rest Haven Cemetery, Windsor.
