George Lewis Chase, 92, passed away peacefully Sept. 16 at his son’s home in Newcastle. With him at the time of his death were his wife Joy, son Richard, and daughter-in-law Mary.
George was born in Winsted, Conn. on April 10, 1914. He graduated from the Gilbert School in 1932 and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1936.
He was employed by Scovill Manufacturing Co. in Waterbury, Conn. for thirty years, and later became vice-president of the Ball & Socket Manufacturing Co. in Cheshire, Conn. He served as a member of the Board of Education in Cheshire for many years and was an active member of the First Congregational Church there.
In 1980, George and Joy retired to Spanish Lakes Park in Nokomis, Fla. There he continued to be an involved member of his community and sang in the choir at St. Andrew Church in Sarasota, Fla. He kept a summer cabin “Brightside” in Colebrook, Conn., until he moved permanently to Maine.
He was preceded in death by parents, Clara and Luther Chase; brothers, Paul and Robert; and son, William.
Known as “Da” to his family, he will be remembered with love as an avid gardener, bridge player, tenor, and kind and generous man.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joy Goddard Chase; son, Richard Chase; daughter-in-law, Mary Chase, all of Newcastle; daughter, Betsy Chase of Steamboat Springs, Col.; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter; all who will miss him dearly.
Memorial service 2 p.m., Thurs., Sept. 28 at the Second Congregational Church in Newcastle.
