George Ogilvie, 77, of Jefferson, passed away peacefully on Nov. 1 at the Togus VA Medical Center.
He was born on Sept. 1, 1936 in Jefferson, the son of the late Emery and Alice Hoffses Ogilvie. As a boy growing up in Jefferson he attended local schools and was a graduate of Lincoln Academy with the class of 1954.
After completing high school, he entered the work force for a few years before proudly serving three years in the U.S. Army. After returning home from the service, a position opened up with the State of Maine as an inspector for the Department of Agriculture. It was this job that helped him transition to a career in the dairy business, a career that saw him own and operate his own dairy farm, Spring Brook Farm, for 20 years. After leaving the dairy industry he would go on to work as head custodian at the Jefferson Village School, a job he would have for over 17 years until retiring in 2005.
He was a hard worker and enjoyed keeping himself busy. In his retirement he could be found tending cattle for Cunningham Farms, cutting his own firewood, taking care of his lawn and garden, and enjoying walks with his wife of 49 years, Toni. He was a simple man that enjoyed the little things in life like spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and his beloved chocolate lab, Hazel.
He was predeceased by his stepfather, Marshall Holmes; sister, Jean Huber; and son, Harland Ogilvie.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Antoinette “Toni” Ogilvie of Jefferson; daughter, Marie Clark and husband Wayne K. of Westbrook; son, Russell Ogilvie of Jefferson; brothers, Allen Holmes and wife Florence of Albion, and Frank “Beanie” Holmes of Windsor; and grandchildren, Katie Clark of Westbrook, Jared Clark of Westbrook, and Harland Ogilvie of Windsor.
A time of visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m., Wed., Nov. 6 at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. A celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m., Thurs., Nov. 7 at the funeral home with Rev. Robin Honaker officiating. Burial with military honors will take place following the service at the Fairview Cemetery in Jefferson.
