George R. Spinney, 86, of Wiscasset, passed away on the morning of May 8 at Coves Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta with his family by his side.
Born in Stanford, Conn. on Oct. 19, 1920, he was the son of Frank and Hazel (Martin) Spinney. He grew up in Industry, where he attended school.
In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army and was a radio operator with the 10th Armored Division. He saw action in Bastogne, Belgium during the Battle of The Bulge.
After his discharge from the service, he married Phyllis L. Pierce on May 11, 1946.
He was employed at Hyde Windlass Company in Bath for 11 years as a machinist. He was self-employed for most of his life at many different occupations; most memorably, owning and operating Spinney’s Market in Newcastle.
He was an avid hunter and enjoyed the sport of shooting. In his later years he took up archery.
He was predeceased by his son, David in 1972.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis; sons, Robert F. and wife Gail of Bristol, Richard and wife Janet of Edgecomb, George Jr. and wife Cathy of West Palm Beach, Fla., Donald and wife Holly of Jefferson, and John and wife Alona of Brookton; daughters, Joan and husband David Teele of Bremen, Lois and husband David Caron of Topsham, and Gale and husband David O’Connor of South Burlington, Vt.; 17 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
