George S. Burgess, 92, of Bristol and West Newton, Mass., died Nov. 29 at Epoch Senior Healthcare in Weston, Mass., after four years of declining health.
Born in Waltham, Mass., he was the son of the late Charles and Nettie Burgess.
After high school graduation, he came to Damariscotta, where he worked for Annie Jacobs at the Riverview Restaurant. There he developed his love of cooking, going on to become a head cook during WWII with the Navy Seabees. He and his galley fed 3,000 GI’s and German POW’s daily on their base in Joliet, Ill.
He retired after 34 years from Wrightson Typographers in Boston, where he was employed as a linotype operator.
He was a flea marketer for 25 years in both Montsweag and Grafton, Mass., as well as an avid fisherman and cook.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marion (Allen) Burgess, whom he met in 1934 at Moxie Cove; son, George A. Burgess; an infant daughter; and brother, Wilfred.
He leaves his daughter, Linda Young and husband Richard of Framingham, Mass.; granddaughter, Amy Young of Framingham, Mass.; grandson, Scott Young and wife Melissa; and great-grandson, Patrick, also of Saco; brother, Charles Burgess and wife Phyllis of Southport and Weston, Mass.; and sister-in-law, Marjorie of Concord, N.H.
Services and burial were held in Waltham, Mass. and sister-in-law, Marjorie of Concord, N.H.
