George Styles, 90, of Thomaston, died Nov. 29 at Mercy Hospital in Portland. He was born Sept. 6, 1922 in London, England to Charles and Grace Day Styles.
He attended Rotherhythe Nautical School in London. He worked on the Civilian Economy until the start of WWII. George went to sea in 1939 and stayed at sea until the end of the war. He left the Merchant Marine in Aug. 21, 1948 and took a job at the Rutherford Press in New Jersey as a bookbinder.
He met and married Bertha Possehl and they made their home in Paramus, N.J. They retired to Thomaston in 1988 where they spent the rest of their lives. He was a lifetime member and past commander of the American Legion in Thomaston. George enjoyed fishing, relaxing and his social activities.
He was predeceased by his wife Bertha in 2003; and sister, Mary Towercy.
He is survived by son, Glenn D. Styles and wife Hilda of Nobleboro; sisters, Lin Granger of Bend, Ore., and Elizabeth Fulling of Florida; brother, Douglas Styles of London, England; grandchildren, Christiana Bachelder of Nobleboro, Patrick D. Styles of Nobleboro, Cassie Franklin of Phoenix, Ariz., and Leah McIntosh of Texas; great-grandson, Zachariah Bachelder of Nobleboro; nephews, John Styles of Long Island, N.Y., and Martin Towercy of Warrington, U.K.; and nieces, Nina Deschamps of U.K. and Christina Fulling of Florida.
Memorial service with military honors 11 a.m., Fri., Dec. 7 at Hall Funeral Home, 78 Main St., Thomaston.
