Gerald “Roy” Sykes, 58, of Newcastle, died June 22 at his home.
He was born on Oct. 30, 1952 in Damariscotta, a son of Robert and Mabelle (Lessner) Sykes.
Roy attended Bristol School and Bristol High School. In 1970 he entered the U.S. Army and served honorably for two years. Following, he completed his high school equivalency and started college courses. He worked for many years for Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia, he then moved to Florida and worked as a carpenter. Roy moved back to Maine in the 1980s to be near his family.
Roy loved hunting and fishing. He enjoyed many days with his long time friend Frankie Elwell of Waldoboro.
He was preceded in death by his father, “Bobby” and brother, Robert “Bunky” Sykes.
In addition to his mother of Newcastle, Roy is survived by his brother, Michael Sykes and wife Robyn of Waldoboro; sisters, Alison Brewer and husband Scott of Nobleboro and Jennifer Clark and husband Billy of Bristol; daughter, Sandy Poland and husband Fernald of Bremen; sons, Jeremy Sykes and companion Lisa Brewer of Bowdoinham, Andrew Knight of Searsport, Roy Knight of Elliot and Shane Sykes and companion Kristina Simmons of Nobleboro; grandchildren, Evan and Alexis of Bremen and Ricky Sykes of Bowdoinham; companion, Pam “Woodard” Mahan; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
At Roy’s request, private services will be held at the convenience of his family on July 10.
