Geraldine Anne Curtis, 83, of Brunswick, passed away Nov. 26 surrounded by family at the home of her son Thom Curtis and Leslie Bettinger.
She was born Oct. 31, 1927 in Newcastle to Harold Thomas Sherman and Sara Emma Haggett Sherman of Damariscotta.
As a child she spent many happy summers with her sister, swimming in the Damariscotta River and looking for fairies in the woods.
She graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1945 where she excelled in sports and was captain of the girls winning basketball team. She was a charter member of the Unholy Four. She went on to study fashion and design at Jackson Von Lauden in Boston.
She was married to Hugh Martin Curtis for 26 years and they raised three children together.
In 1969 she started Curtis Framing and was sole proprietor for 30 years. Her artistic talents further included drawing, painting, quilting, gardening, music and dancing. She was a great champion of animal rights and the natural world. She won an award for community improvement for her outstanding gardening efforts at her residence. Her wit and laughter touched all that knew and loved her.
She is survived by children, Rebecca Ann Curtis and husband Jeffrey Peters of Waldo, Thomas Warren Curtis and partner Leslie Bettinger of Brunswick and Nancy Ann Curtis-Strange and husband Michael Strange of Brunswick; sister, Mildred (Middy) S. Thomas of Brunswick; grandchildren, Thomas Jefferson Strange and partner Holly Schwind of Missoula, Mont., Rosamond Curtis Peters and husband Ronald Mitchell of Belfast, Nathan Martin Strange of Brunswick, Megan Rose Curtis of Somerville, Mass. and Adam Warren Curtis and partner Laura Bliss of Arlington, Mass.; and great-grandson born Nov. 19, Angus Jeffrey Mitchell of Belfast.
Celebration of her life 1-4 p.m., Sat., Dec. 11 at the home of her sister, Middy Thomas, 7 Wildwood Dr., Brunswick. All friends and family are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Humane Society or Crystal Spring Community Farm in Brunswick.
