Gertrude E. (Mahn) Hesselschwerdt, 98, formerly of Milton, Mass. and South Bristol, died Jan. 25 in New London, N.H. after a brief illness.
She was educated in Boston, Mass., a member of Boston University class of 1931. She taught in Barre, Vt., Scituate, Mass., and later at Katherine Gibbs. She was a 60 year member of the East Congregational Church in Milton, Mass., past president of the Women’s Society and a member of the diaconate. She was a 50 year member and past president of the Milton Women’s Club. She was a Cub Scout Den mother, a volunteer at Milton Hospital, and a member of the Women’s Seaman’s Friends.
She was a 60 year summer resident of South Bristol, where she enjoyed fishing and having her family visit. She enjoyed world travel.
Gertrude was predeceased by her husband, Prof. August L. Hesselschwerdt Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Ann Eastman and husband Andrew of Grantham, N.H.; son, Peter L. Hesselschwerdt and wife Marta of East Weymouth, Mass.; grandchildren, Cynthia Martin of Royse City, Tex., Douglas Eastman of Granville, Ohio, Fred Hesselschwerdt of Holbrook, Mass., and Peter A. Hesselschwerdt of Santa Ana, Costa Rica; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours 5-8 p.m., Tues., Jan. 27 in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 5 Canton Ave., Milton, Mass. Funeral service 10 a.m., Wed., Jan. 28 in the East Congregational Church, 610 Adams St., Milton, Mass. Interment Gethsemane Cemetery, Boston, Mass.
