Gladys S. Estey, 96, of Newcastle, passed away on the morning of Aug. 29 at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Born on March 26, 1922 in Hartford, Conn., she was the daughter of Frank and Bernice Sisson.
She worked at Travelers Insurance in Connecticut before coming to Maine in 1971. After moving to Newcastle, she worked for many years at Briggs Pharmacy and Arsenic and Old Lace.
She volunteered at the Miles registration desk for over 25 years, and for many years with Daffodil Days Cancer Drive and at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. She has been a communicant of St. Patrick’s since moving to Maine, and was a longtime member of the Shamrocks.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 44 years, Robert L. Estey; brother, Richard Sisson; as well as a dear sister-in-law, Ann Sisson.
She is survived by sons, Stephen M. Estey and wife Trudy, James R. Estey and wife Vicki, and Thomas R. Estey and wife Jill; daughter, Jeanine M. Sullivan and husband Mark; grandsons, Colin Sullivan and wife Sami, Jon Estey and wife Kyla, Jeffrey Estey, and Bryan Estey and wife Mariann; granddaughter, Aimee Morrison; and great-grandchildren, Lucas Morrison, Corey Estey and Zakk Estey.
A wake will be held from 5-7 p.m., Thurs., Sept. 6 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m., Fri., Sept. 7 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Newcastle. She will be laid to rest privately, with her husband, in the Hopkins Cemetery in Jefferson.
