Gloria M. Sykes Scott, 83, of Waldoboro, passed away at her home on Nov. 21. She was born on Feb. 23, 1931 to Newell and Eleanor (Whaley) Sykes in Bristol.
Gloria graduated from Bristol High School and soon after married the love of her life, Ivan Scott, Jr., on Nov. 23, 1950. They were happily married for 55 years.
Gloria was a homemaker for most of her life. She worked occasionally for the Waldoboro 5 & 10 and Barter’s Restaurant and ran her own second hand shop, but preferred to be home with her family. She was a homebody, yet stayed busy all the time. She was very crafty, and was skilled in many different areas of needlework. She knitted, made needlepoint art, and quilted. One of her favorite things to do was attend yard sales, where she kept her eyes open for anything that she might be able to use for her projects.
Gloria gave many of her crafts away, including donating over 40 quilts to the Pen Bay Hospital Maternity Ward. She also supported the United Service Organization.
Gloria was a member of the Odds & Ends Club, a group of ladies who took turns hosting a luncheon on a monthly basis; in its later years yearly meetings were more practical. She was the hostess for their last meeting, which was held in September.
Gloria loved her grandchildren and was a great listener. She gave them many of her homemade dolls and quilts, which they cherish. She hosted many sleepovers where she and her grandchildren would talk and watch movies. She loved watching horror movies, particularly anything by Stephen King, but after Ivan passed she switched to other genres.
Gloria liked to play the occasional practical joke and research genealogy, and she did not like having her picture taken.
She is predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Ivan Scott Jr.; parents, Newell and Eleanor Sykes; parents-in-law, Ivan and Tina Scott Sr.; brother-in-law, Gorden Scott and wife Dot; son-in-law, Frederick Medicke; and sister, Virginia Collamore and husband Maurice.
Gloria is survived by children, Warren Scott of Waldoboro, Brian Scott and wife Johnna of Waldoboro, and Rose Scott and husband Larry Bull of Warren; grandchildren, Paul Scott of Nobleboro, Debbie Gould and husband Gary of Warren, Dawn Heal of Waldoboro, Shawna Scott of Waldoboro, and Jana Doherty of Augusta; great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Emma, and Madison Scott of Nobleboro, Liam Gould of Warren, and Pammie Lavoie of Waldoboro; and sister, Ruth Leeman and husband Merton.
A service will be held at a later date to be determined by the family.
