Grace Evelyn Simmons, 95, of Waldoboro, and a former longtime resident of Bremen, died May 13 at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport after a period of failing health.
Grace was born Dec. 25, 1915 in Revere, Mass., the daughter of Allen Carlton and Winifred Alberta Shepherd Brown. At a young age her family moved to Bath, where she attended Morse High School.
She married Lester I. Simmons and made their home in Bremen for 44 years. The wife of lobsterman, she helped her husband tend his traps, and care for his boat and made the family home a special place to be. As her children grew up, she also took on jobs at the many sardine factories in Rockland packing fish for over 10 years, and made wreaths during the holidays to earn a little extra spending money for gifts for her children and grandchildren.
She is a former member of the Bath Baptist Church and attended the Boothbay Community Fellowship. She enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sewing embroidery gifts for family members on birthdays and Christmas, and entertaining friends and family.
Grace is predeceased by her husband Lester I. Simmons, who died in 1981; son, Hugh Craney, who died in 2000; brother, Carlton Brown; sister, Margaret McCarron; son-in-law, Franz Pease; and special friend, Ruth Pease.
Survivors include sons, Allen Craney of Tenants Harbor, Raymond Simmons and wife Carol of Damariscotta and Ira Simmons of South China and wife Kristine; daughters, Margaret Brown and husband Randal of Waldoboro, Eugenie Pease of Appleton and Winifred Reed of Bath; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Craney; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and special friends, Gloria Bowers and Bridie Collamore.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Tues., May 17 at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Celebration of Grace’s life 11 a.m., Wed., May 18 at the funeral home. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Bremen.
