Grace H. Poland, 77, of Whitefield, passed away Sept. 19 at the Country Manor Nursing Home in Coopers Mills. Grace was born in East Baldwin on Jan. 20, 1929, a daughter of Kenneth and Alice Wade Fernandes Boothby.
She wrote the Whitefield News column for The Lincoln County News and Lincoln County Weekly for several years. She was a member of the Arlington Grange #528. She attended church most recently at the First Baptist Church in Hallowell.
She loved to bake and deliver goodies for her neighbors, make homemade gifts (afghans for newborns angels and hand towels for her neighbors), make new friends on the golf course, collect golf balls, take photographs, watch birds and other wildlife, and listen to Alan Jackson (saw him in concert with her daughter in N.H.).
She was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, the Rev. Philip R. Poland who died March 21, 2003.
She is survived by children, Peter P. Poland of Whitefield, Naomi L. Poland of Farmingdale, Carol P. Aceto of Whitefield, and adopted daughter Amy and her husband Shawn Buck of Gardiner; sister-in-law Peggy and husband Julian Rubenstein of Thompson; brothers-in-law James Hanna and wife Delores of Boothbay, and Orman “Alan” Poland and wife Joyce of Cushing; cousins Nancy and husband Ron Tilton of Windham, and Eddie Wheeler and wife Leilee of Arizona; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; and special friends Myrtie and Charles, Lydia, Fred, and Liz, George, Mary-Ann, Sue, Ed and especially Pastor Peter Inchcombe of Jersey Isles, soon to be back home in Maine.
Visiting hours 4-7 p.m., Thurs., Sept. 21 at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m., Fri., Sept. 22. Burial to follow beside her husband at the New Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.
