Grace Meserve Nein, of Torrington, Conn., passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Nov. 26 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, with her loving family at her side. Grace was born in Cambridge, Mass. on Jan. 19, 1940, daughter of the late Earle and Dorothy Stevens Meserve, who later moved their family to Damariscotta.
Grace was a 1958 graduate of Lincoln Academy in Newcastle. She worked for the New England Telephone Company in high school and before she married and started her family. She later obtained her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) nursing license. She worked as a nurse at Bath Memorial Hospital and upon retiring, moved to Torrington, Conn. to be closer to her family in 1990.
Grace cherished all of her dogs and cats; was fond of knitting, puzzles, and movies, enjoyed reading, especially a good “juicy” medical thriller. She also tutored many children in her earlier years, teaching the gift of reading. She loved babysitting children and was “honorary grandmother” to many. She loved Bingo, Trivial Pursuit, and Scrabble. She loved spending time at the ocean, and she loved spending time with her family, and always shared the holidays and special occasions with them.
Grace was predeceased by her son, Johnson Nein; sister, Gloria Craig; and brother, Bruce Meserve.
She is survived by daughters, Gretchen Bergman and Juli Nein; beloved grandchildren, Charles Andrew Nickerson, and Kaitlin Elizabeth Nickerson and fiancé Travis Ward; younger sister, Pamela Erbisch and husband Fred of Michigan, and their loving children and grandchildren; niece, Lori Friese and husband Jeff of N. Carolina and their loving children and grandchildren; niece, Jennifer Hillman and husband Michael of Gales Ferry, Conn. and their children; nephew, Luke Gray and wife Bonnie and their children of N. Carolina; and nephew, Zachary Brown and wife Alisha and their son of Michigan; many dear friends, colleagues, and classmates she tried to keep in touch with over the years.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association at http://www.alz.org/join_the_cause_donate.asp, or to the cause of your choice, in her name.
Grace’s memorial service will be held later in her beloved Maine at the convenience of the family.
