Gwendolyn Mae Philbrook, of Lincolnville and most recently of Warren, died on Dec. 26, 2012, with grace at Miles Memorial Hospital after suffering from a brain aneurysm on Dec. 24, 2012.
Gwen was born Nov. 9, 1928, the only child of Olive and Mertland Jackson of Thomaston. Gwen grew up in Thomaston and attended local schools where she met her long time girlfriends, Mrs. Virginia Smith Robinson and Mrs. Lois Hastings Jack.
Gwen married the love of her life, Vaughan Philbrook, on Aug. 1, 1953. They were blessed with two sons, Larry Lee Philbrook and Ronald Vaughan Philbrook. They made their home in Warren, and later moved to Lincolnville where a lot of great memories with their family were made. Together they enjoyed road trips on their Harley and spent many nights out dancing. You could also find them at their grandchildren’s sporting events, hardly ever missing a game.
Early on Gwen worked as a hairdresser, a true passion of hers. You could often find her working in her beautiful gardens, hauling in each and every rock on her own. She had such a creative personality, one that never ceased to amaze all that knew her. Gwen always had a clean vehicle, the motorcycle and car were washed with love on a weekly basis. She also loved a good bargain, never paying full price for anything. Her fun loving spirit and the love she had for her family are what made her such an outstanding, unforgettable woman.
Gwen was predeceased by her oldest son, Larry Lee on Feb. 18, 2005; husband, Vaughan on Nov. 10, 2010; and most recently, her beloved dog, Buddy.
Gwen is survived by her youngest son, Ron Philbrook and wife Denise of Warren; grandchildren, Larry Vaughan Philbrook and wife Billie Jo of Lincolnville, Allison Donn Moody and husband Brandon of Appleton, and Melissa Lena Philbrook of Warren; her beloved four-legged grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Janet Andrews and husband Paul of Warren, and Carolyn Seeley of Holden; brother-in-law, Warren (Willie) Philbrook and wife Elizabeth of Warren; nephews, Gregory Andrews, Timothy Andrews of Damariscotta, and David and Steven Philbrook; nieces, Francie Philbrook-Giguere, Sonja Seeley-Wilbur, Theresa Seeley, and Heidi Seeley-Duran; and many great-nephews.
At Gwen’s request, there will be no funeral. Gwen and Vaughan’s wishes were to be buried together, which the family will honor. A graveside memorial is planned for the spring. A notice will be published for family and close friends so that they may attend.
In lieu of flowers, Gwen requested that you make a donation to the Maine Cancer Fund, 170 US Rt. 1, Suite 250, Falmouth 04105 or the Alzheimer’s Association Maine Chapter, 383 US Rt. 1, Suite 2C, Scarborough 04074.
Arrangements were made with Crapiel Riposta Funeral Home, Belfast.
